MACON TRANSITIONAL CENTER - Feb. 2, 2014

The team was Wayne and Julia Smith, Tyler Bentley and myself and we had seven men in the service today. We started out the service by one of the residents opening up in prayer. Then we did some video worship which the guys really enjoyed.

After praise and worship, I turned the service over to Wayne and he began his series on "How to Study the Bible" and this was part 1. Text: Psalms 19:7-11

If you are studying the Bible just to memorize scriptures, then you are doing it for the wrong purpose. Our purpose is to learn the Word of God so we can spread the Gospel.

If you are studying the Bible just to memorize scriptures, then you are doing it for the wrong purpose. Our purpose is to learn the Word of God so we can spread the Gospel.

We have a treasure in our hands and it is eternal. We are indebted to many people for being able to hold the Bible. They died for this cause and yet many leave it on the coffee table or bookshelf collecting dust.

Wayne discussed the translations, how we got them, who translated and the process behind them. This is important to know so you can rightly choose what translations to study.

People give many reasons for not studying:
"I don't understand it..."
"It's confusing..."
"I don't know how..."
"That's the pastor's job..." which is a dangerous approach. We're literally putting our eternity into the hands of another man.
"I don't have time..." As yourself, where does the Bible come into priority in our lives behind work, sports, family, television, internet, etc. etc. etc.
"The Bible is boring..."

The foundational reason if people would be honest is....
"It convicts - makes me uncomfortable..."

Purpose for studying the Bible:
1. Essential for Spiritual growth - 1 Peter 2;2; Hebrews 5:11-14
2. Essential for Spiritual effectiveness - 2 Timothy 3:16-17
3. We become more useful and effective in God's hands.

Other Scriptures used: I Cor 2:12-14; I John 2:27

Dangerous Approaches to Studying the Bible:
1. Emotional Approach
2. Spiritual Approach
3. Pragmatic Approach
4. Superficial Approach

Dependable Approach to Bible Study:
1. What do i see in the Word
2. Understand what it means
3. How does it relate
4. Apply it in your home

This was followed with a question and answer session along with discussion.

We closed by getting in a circle and praying together.

Our new schedule at Macon TC is the first and third Sunday mornings from 9:30 - 11:30 and the fourth Saturday evening from 7:00 - 9:00.
